It is in the middle of the  Karakum Desert , about 260 kilometres (160 mi) north of  Ashgabat , the capital of Turkmenistan.  The gas reserve found here is one of the largest in the world. known locally as the " Door to Hell " or '' Gates of Hell ", is a  natural gas field  collapsed into an underground  cavern  located in  Derweze ,  Turkmenistan .  Geologists set it on fire to prevent the spread of  methane  gas, and it has been burning continuously since 1971.
